\nIn the residence of the Count Respekts<\/i><\/p>\n

Fantazy:\u00a0<\/span>Did you see how many Italian marble statues they have in the foyer?
\nIn the holiest garb of Adam\u2019s father
\nThey commune with the hired help… And for every
\nbutler… a statue… and every one of the
\n<\/span>figures is larger than nature would command.
\nfor those butlers, their heads
\ngraze the ceilings, and their giant Herculean
\nbuilds resemble limbs.<\/p>\n

Rze\u017anicki:\u00a0And there\u2019s two Lincolns in the driveway.<\/p>\n

Fantazy:\u00a0And so I believe we shall also find maidens
\nLike inhuman Amazons
\nI shall be blind, or mute,
\nand you be reasonable… Look at me, and say:
\nWhat of the human do you find under the divinity of the
\nshape… Cull it out… Confess to your father
\nof your political conscience, enter
\nthe closest of relations with his wife, until she confesses
\nwhat yoke her stepson oppresses.
\nIn a word \u2013 it\u2019s as if you were off to a commission,
\nLook \u2013 act \u2013 and watch… and I shall play
\nthe naif, and let everyone play me for a fool.<\/p>\n

Rze\u017anicki:\u00a0But they know you…<\/p>\n

Stella:\u00a0You tremble all over.<\/p>\n

Idalia:\u00a0It is nothing… my heart beats… I am ill
\nI have journeyed… through terrible heat…
\nI drove swiftly \u2013 despite the doctor\u2019s
\ncouncil… despite my own hundred admonitions.<\/p>\n

Aside<\/i><\/p>\n

Oh! Wretched am I! … and so terribly mad!<\/p>\n

Out loud<\/i><\/p>\n

Have the guests arrived?<\/p>\n

Stella:\u00a0Count Fantazy is here with Mr. Rze\u017anicki… and that uninvited General.<\/p>\n

Idalia:\u00a0Tell me… could I sneak, unnoticed… into where they are gathered?<\/p>\n

Stella:\u00a0They are all by the water.<\/p>\n

Stella:\u00a0You are surprised at the lady\u2019s unexpected visit \u2013 there are so many travellers today.<\/p>\n

They exit. All are in the garden.<\/i><\/p>\n

Fantazy:\u00a0I don\u2019t suppose we\u2019ll be drinking to Russia, my countess? Unless we say \u2013 bottom\u2019s up…<\/p>\n

Countess:\u00a0Let us drink to a friend of the Poles.<\/p>\n

Fantazy:\u00a0Let us speak of Russia, my dear Retired General.<\/p>\n

General:\u00a0Yes, I\u2019ve come for a rest, to see some friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fantazy:\u00a0But what of the Crimea? What of Donbas? People there are dying!<\/p>\n

General:\u00a0You see, my good sir, ever since I have been retired I have practised yoga, I pray and I meditate. And the Crimea has always been Russian. That is no annexation, it is a unification.<\/p>\n

Count Respekt:\u00a0But the four siblings that perished under Stalin, don\u2019t you recall? Your Polish mother and wife, don\u2019t you remember them? Aren\u2019t you even a Russian? You were a liberal.<\/p>\n

General:\u00a0I have a fine memory. But my head hurts from this conversation, my boy. I grew up in Donbas. My sister lives there. She lives in a cellar, eating crackers, because the Ukrainian government keeps crashing down missiles.
